Book Review! “Be Happy: How to Live Your Life By Design” by Aisa Ross

FLOW – ***

As much as I love to read, I find it very important to supplement my “pointless but oh so fun” books with personal growth books.
I think they are very, very important.

This one was great in a really unique way. The author was very honest about her struggles as a child and coping with her bipolar and other health issues.
There is something special about getting advice from someone who managed to turn their life around in such a dramatic way.

The biggest thing I find with self help and any kind of healing/health issue is that the person must WANT to change. One of the biggest reasons I am such an advocate on reading books like this is because you never know when you are going to find something that *speaks* to you.

Overall I found the information to be helpful and easy to follow. Anyone who has a mental illness or just needs to have more structure and purpose in their life would benefit from reading this book.

Book Review! “Intentional” by MK Harkins

PLOT   – *****
FLOW – *****

First things first, this book was goooooood. It was pretty unique in the way it was written. The author skipped around in all the main characters heads ALL.THE.TIME.

Different POV’s is usually something I despise. I don’t really know why, but it takes me a little while to adjust and it has a tendency to take away from the story.

However, in this book it just worked. I don’t really know the magical formula that was used to make it work so great, but it was definitely magic. The book would have not been nearly as good if only one or even two POV’s were used.

Now, it will be hard for me to review this book without giving away to much (I despise spoilers).
The main characters are Mattie, Sarah, and Jeremy.
Mattie has been friends with Sarah since the fourth grade and was even taken in by Sarah’s parents when Mattie’s died.
Jeremy is the classic hot guy, attorney, that works with Sarah but falls madly in love with Mattie.
Cade is the man who falls for Mattie after Jeremy breaks her heart.

Even at the very beginning of the story, I knew something was off about one of the characters. Sadly I was proven right…..more right than even I thought!
Even though you may think just from reading the description that you will know what happens, you won’t.

I can’t really say much else, but this story has romance, suspense, heartbreak jealousy …..did I mention the suspense??

The ending reminded me a little bit of Sweet Home Alabama….and that is the only teaser you are going to get 😉

Newly engaged and deliriously happy, Mattie, a talented graphic designer, and Jeremy, a successful partner in a law firm, look forward to a lifetime of wedding bliss in their new home in Sedona, Arizona. But their perfect love story disintegrates when Mattie discovers evidence of Jeremy’s massive betrayal. Unable to face the memories that haunt her with every aching step, Mattie flees to Mercer Island, Washington to start over. Unfortunately, she can’t run away from the boundless pain as she struggles to make sense of the life she thought she knew – until she meets Cade.

Tattooed engineer by day, lead singer in a rock band at night, Cade has experienced his own brand of pain with the loss of his college sweetheart. He and Mattie instantly bond over their mutual heartbreak, and as their friendship deepens, it ignites a new flame within Mattie, soothing the constant heartache for her former fiancée.

Just when Mattie thinks she may have found another stab at happiness, Jeremy reenters her life, and with him, all the crushing memories. It’s soon clear, though, that the trauma from her past may not be quite what it first seemed. Will the truth bring closure and a new beginning – or will it mean the end of both relationships forever?

Readers will instantly be swept up in the saga of love and heartbreak that unfolds. Offering a rarely-before-seen glimpse into the heart and mind of a romantic villain, audiences will find a welcome reprieve from the typical romance novel.

Book Review “Weather Wits and Science Snickers” by Steve LaNore

FLOW – ****

This was the greatest little book I have read to my kids in a long time! I had my 12 year old read this to me and her little sisters, ages 5 and 7.

My 12 year old really enjoyed it. She is more the creative type, and this book is chock full of amazing little tidbits and it is presented in a way that even if you don’t like the subject of Science you will love this book.

I’m not (too) ashamed to admit that I didn’t really know most of the information in this book either!
I mean, do you know exactly what fossil fuel is? Or what has to happen to the clouds for the moon to have a halo around it?These are just a few of the questions that will be answered in this book.
If you already know the answers, kudos go to you! 😛

The jokes were well placed and illustrated. My kids especially loved the joke about “Jupiter going to the doctor”.
Also, the illustrations and pictures in general were AWESOME.

This would be a GREAT book to gift to any child on your christmas list.
I would say the target audience is pretty right on. I think that you could even push it to 14 or 15 year olds and they would still enjoy it. Especially if they are interested in Science.

The author recommends the paper back version for the best experience, you can get it

You can get the Kindle version

“Weather Wits and Science Snickers” is a kid’s
book but adults will like it too. It’s a comic book, but it’s not. It’s silly
but serious as well. It’s not a textbook, but readers will learn some neat facts.

Adults and children alike will enjoy the funny comic-style illustrations and
upbeat mood. The book covers a wide range of topics, from cold fronts
and tornadoes to the planet Jupiter and even vacuum cleaners on the

Each corny joke and full-color illustration is followed by an age-appropriate (2nd grade and up) explanation, and real-world images. Resource Web links are indexed in the back for further study.

Reading Weather Wits along with your kids can make for a fun and educational time together. You’ll find it a breezy  and informative read for weather and science
lovers of all ages!

Book Review! “The Colors of Friendship” by K.R. Raye

PLOT   – *****
FLOW – ****

This is one of those rare books that bring out such a range of emotions it is hard to figure out which emotion speaks the strongest to you.
This is a book about three friends in their Sophomore year in college. They are about as different as they could be.

Melody is one of those super romantic girls, who thinks that they are going to find a fairy tale knight and ride off into the sunset.

Imani is very career driven and refuses to get involved with anyone, no matter how she feels about them.

Lance is a football player who loves to be a womanizer. Even though he clearly doesn’t respect the women he has one night stands with, he loves Melody and Imani with a brotherly and protective fierceness.

Things are going well until Melody starts dating Kevin. Warning bells are going off in Imani and Lance’s head, but what can they do? Melody would never believe that something was wrong with her prince charming.

Meanwhile Imani is having trouble’s of her own. She really likes Trevor and they are great friends.
She really can’t afford to get involved with anyone…but will that decision ultimately come back to haunt her?

The end of this book is like fireworks exploding. Anyone who has felt the effects of abuse will cringe.
I have been touched by abuse, but it was a family friend and I never knew the relationship very well.
Anyone else might be too affected to really enjoy this book, but I think it is an important subject.

Overall, this book was a great read! I can’t wait to read the next book in the series to find out what happens to the three friends after the ending of this book. The good news is I don’t have to wait long.
Coming Nov. 19th!

Book Review! “Jill” by C.W. Schultz

PLOT   – *****
FLOW – ****

I purposefully waited until Halloween to read this story. It didn’t disappoint! I couldn’t have hand-picked a better choice.

This is one of those books that will hook right from the first few pages and have you rushing back to it every chance you get.

Right at the beginning of the book you meet Rachel. It doesn’t take you long to realize that Rachel is the killer that the police know as “Jill”. She kills her first victim in a way that will leave you wondering if you can go on in the first few pages……of course you can’t help but go on!

Rachel has what every man hating serial killer could want. She gets all the Norcuron she could need from her brother. She also happens to catch the eye of a lead detective on the “Jill” case when her husband leaves her. The perfect informant!

What could possibly go wrong? Ummmmm, a LOT!

There were so many twists and turns, characters and angles, that it will make your head spin. In a good way.
It was written well so it was never confusing. The characters were well developed and you knew exactly who was who. I hate books that you can’t remember which character is which.

Overall it was book I would recommend to anyone.
Solid five stars!

Download “Jill” NOW!

At home, Rachel Rhodes is a mother and wife. At work, she is a manager. At night, she is the infamous serial killer known only as Jill. Her secret will eventually affect everyone in her life, from her family members to the detectives investigating the case.

Luck starts off on her side as she befriends heartbroken detective Cole Dale, who’s an important link to the investigation. However, that luck seems to fade when Rachel meets Cole’s partner, an unorthodox and mentally unstable detective, Perry Charleton, driven by personal reasons to stop Jill using any means necessary.

The novel is told in an omniscient narrative style, allowing the story to have a hauntingly neutral perspective which disguises everything as it progresses and leaves no room for predictability, entangling the reader in a web of evil. Layered with symbolism and motifs, leaving the story to come together like a puzzle through the characters’ actions and interactions; its themes deal with such issues as dysfunction, impressionability and influence, sexism, racism and even humiliation.

Book Review! “Thoughts of a Pure Mind” by Calvin Bland

FLOW – ****

I have always loved poems. I am always looking for ways to help my brain think creatively about a situation. Usually that is exactly what a poem does.
I really like how this book had a positive spin as well.

That doesn’t mean I don’t love Edgar Allen Poe and his poems, but they are more for entertainment purposes more than anything else.
THIS book will actually leave you feeling better about life.

If I had to pick my favorite poems I would probably pick *Yes or No* and *Magic*.
The great thing about a book of poems is that there is usually something for everyone, no matter your personal taste.

The only thing that was confusing with this book is that the BOLD text that corresponds to the poems is UNDER the poem.
At first I thought that the bold text was the introduction. It had me wondering a few times until I figured that out.

Overall this would be a great book for anyone. The paperback as a gift is also a really good idea.
Almost that time of year again!

Book Review! “Living Gluten Free” by Aaron T. Harper

FLOW – ****

I have been throwing the idea around in my head for awhile that I probably need to go gluten free.
Although I don’t believe I have anything close to celiacs, I think I am definitely sensitive to gluten. Especially the genetically modified gluten we are eating these days.

I was always hesitant to go gluten free because it eliminates soooo many food choices! Very daunting. Especially if you go gluten free for the whole family.

This book has helped me learn that going gluten free is definitely worth the effort.
How many of the everyday symptoms I have can be attributed to gluten intolerance? I have always had stomach problems, but it is something that you learn to live with when it isn’t severe.

“Living Gluten Free” gave me the first steps I need to take in this new journey. Some of them I NEVER would have thought of. Like going through and eliminating cross-contamination risks in your kitchen. You won’t believe some of the things you will need to replace! Never would have crossed my mind.

The problem we face as a whole this day and age is the food is literally killing us. We are addicted to the very things we are only supposed to have in moderation. Our health is hanging in the balance, and we need to educate ourselves and our children.
Do you know that the biggest indicator of childhood obesity is the parent? Children learn from our example and I for one am going to start setting a better example!

Get this book, it is definitely worth reading.

Book Review! “Out of The Box Awakening” by Jennifer Theriot

PLOT   – ****
FLOW – ****

What a wonderful and charming romance! There was something about this book that had me connecting to it right from the beginning.

Olivia is a fifty seven year old wife and mother. She has dedicated her life to her husband and her children.
Just when she thinks that she will be able to settle into the final chapter in her life and enjoy her grown children and all that entails she is thrown a huge curveball.

Her husband Alan gets a job transfer. She has to move from her home in Texas to Chicago.
Can she reinvent herself and leave behind her children and her beautiful house?
What if Chicago holds a future she could have never imagined?

Like I said before, this book somehow manages to draw you right in. I was even holding back tears right from the start.
Especially when Olivia and her daughter are drinking wine and saying goodbye to the house.

Another thing I loved was how many characters this book had. They were all very well developed and they each brought a unique element to the book.

Overall this book is a solid five stars and I will definitely be recommending it to all of my friends who read romance.

Soon everything she thought she knew about herself and her life will be challenged. She has only courage, love, and her passion for music to carry her through the maelstrom—or draw her further in.

Out of the Box Awakening is a story of shared passion and shared joy. Jennifer Theriot has written a compelling book about what happens when two people find new life and new love for themselves and for those around them.

Book Review! “Eternal Rising” by Cynthia Lee

PLOT   – *****
FLOW – ****

So, we all know that I read a LOT of books. Although I have never been officially tested (I don’t know if they even have a test!) I am pretty sure that I fall somewhere into the realm of a speed reader.

However, something strange happens with some books. It seems like I read slower. Almost as if it’s the equivalent of  fine wine, or gourmet food. It is completely sub-conscious on my end, but I do notice it happens every great once in awhile.

THIS is a book that made it happen.
The prologue sucks you in and you never truly escape. I know I will be thinking about Auriyanna, Damion, Nala and Daniel forever, and can’t wait until the next book comes out.
No, seriously, it needs to come out now.

This is a story about vampires, but it is unlike any vampire story I have ever read before.
In “Eternal Rising” we learn about Auriyanna. She is half vampire and half human. Her vampire mother left when Auriyanna was very young, to protect her from those who would harm her.
Her human father remarries but never gets over Auriyanna’s mother leaving them and turns into a drunken, angry shell of his former self.

Auriyanna learns that her father is keeping a huge secret from her. He refuses to tell her anything even after she was attacked in her own home by…something. Even more strangely a man saves her.

Fed up she leaves shortly before her 18th birthday.
With a strangely bottomless checking account she travels the world and becomes the dancer she always dreamed of being.
No matter how hard she tries, she just can’t get rid of her past. It is like a boulder that follows her around.

Finally the breathtakingly handsome man who saved her years ago reappears. His name is Damion and it is with him that she begins to learn what she is, and how much the fate of the world rests on her shoulders…..

Did I mention I loved it?! The ending literally has you on pins and needles. I am sure I will re-read this book a few more times before the next one comes out just to get my *fix*.

Highly recommend, five stars!

Book Review! “Shattered” by April Adams

PLOT   – *****
FLOW – ****

This book is absolutely great. Mystery, Magic, a handsome elf 😉

The heroine awakens in this book with no memory of who she is, and she has no idea WHERE she is!
An elf named Glenn finds her and rescues her.
Together they try to figure out who she is and why there are dark forces that hunt her.

I forgot how much I enjoy reading a book from *another world*. As much as I love Urban Fantasy, Dystopian, Historical, etc. etc, it just can’t quite compete with a whole new world!

I can’t forget to mention that the author did a wonderful job of developing the characters and creating vivid pictures in your mind.

To sum it up, I enjoyed this book immensely! So much so that I looked and found out the second book is out 😉
I will definitely be putting that on my “To Be Read” list immediately.

When the battered woman wakes on the frosted grass, the only thing she remembers is the blood-thirsty cult offering her as a sacrifice in a ceremony gone serendipitously wrong.

She has no name, no past, and seemingly no future as her swollen eyes slide shut for what she hopes is the last time. Glenn Elambil, a handsome elf, rescues her, bringing her from the brink of death into a life she never could have imagined. She finds herself on a different planet, a world where magic is as natural as drawing breath.

It’s not all wizards and wonder, though. The War Lord, the god of the cult that tried to kill her, is coming. Those on the side of evil hunt her with dark magic and darker intent. The good powers of the world need her to do some favors for them, and to top it off she’s got a growing, complicated infatuation with Glenn. The key to her future lies in her past, which might be easier to find if her mind hadn’t been shattered and reprogrammed by the cult. She must face it all and dive head first into her own psyche to find what is lost if she has any chance of survival.

Shattered, book one in The Legends of Rune trilogy, is a contemporary fantasy unlike any other.
